I had wondered if this hotel, which I visited many years ago, would have gone downhill on changing hands. Not so. Cleanliness immaculate. The room (ordinary double) was big enough and the bed comfortable. You can choose how often you want it cleaned and request additional tea, etc. The staff were professional, friendly and helpful. One review had commented on slightly 'tired' decor but the overall impression and ambience are really nice and there are thoughtful touches, such as the sofas and lamps on landings, which is a boon if you suffer from insomnia, as I do, and don't want to disturb your room mate, or have to hang around waiting for companions. It's leisure club is also the best I've used - decent size pool without being too deep, hot tub, sauna, good air and water temperature, poolside hooks and benches for towels (which they provide), sun beds, all the facilities you could want in changing rooms, etc. We were also allowed to use it immediately after checkout. With hindsight we wished we had used the Grill on The Hill (hotel restaurant), as the prices weren't bad and the steak pie in the local Chef and Brewer left much to be desired!

The setting, luxury, little extras and general ambience of the hotel were totally unexpected and much enjoyed! On arrival, the drive up to the hotel blew us away (even the taxi driver was impressed) and the reception area also very impressive. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. The little touches like the room refresh for those staying longer than one night, and the chilled water station really added to the experience. I made a cup of tea in my room one morning and realised I didn't have time to drink it, but take-out cups were provided with the tea and coffee making facilities! Perfect! We wished we'd booked longer than our 2 night stay as we could have done so much more, just being based at the hotel! I heard the walks in the grounds are lovely, not to mention potential Insta moments on the oversized deckchair and a fun game of giant chess! We made good use of the pool and it all came together to feel like a real holiday. We were so sad to leave and will be returning.

The welcoming atmosphere & the staff. This hotel has original features, featured ceilings, stonework, leaded glass windows & in the old part of the hotel, the magnificent staircase which is gazed upon by ancestors old. To the extensive grounds there is a giant chess set, table & chairs, proper golf range. Pets are welcome inside. The Spa was great using Elemis products. We had back, neck & arm massages follwed with a facial, so relaxing. We then went into the clean pool & also used the jacizzi, steam & sauna. As snow was down outside and it was a barmy -6° the hotel remained warm. We asked & were given extra blankets for our beds.

The hotel is beautiful and has lots of beautiful features like stain glass windows and rooms to sit in and relax, it is high up on a hill and the landscape is beautiful, even with all the snow it was very magical. Our room was a standard double but it was warm, clean, and very comfortable, had no issues, I called for extra pillow, which was given to me straight away, even with the fire alarm going off (a false alarm) it was still a great stay, food was great breakfast and dinner and all staff were friendly and polite. Thank you for a great stay in a beautiful area. Would definitely stay at this hotel again.

I had a wonderful stay at this property! The place was impeccably clean, and I could tell that a lot of care went into maintaining the rooms and common areas. The staff were incredibly friendly and always willing to assist with anything I needed, which made my experience feel even more personal and welcoming. The facilities were top-notch, with everything I needed for a comfortable stay. What truly stood out was the beautiful location—surrounded by stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere that made it the perfect escape. Overall, a fantastic experience, and I would highly recommend it!
